Discover the story of Erejuwa II, the Olu of Warri, deposed for supporting Awolowo's political party in 1964.
Erejuwa II served as the Olu of Warri, the traditional ruler of the Itsekiri people, at two separate periods: from 1951 to 1964 and again from 1966 to 1989. Before ascending to the throne, he had a career as a Senior Officer with the United Africa Company (UAC). However, his reign was cut short in 1964 when he was deposed by the NCNC government due to his support for Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group, a political party with significant backing from the Itsekiri people at the time.
This political alignment sparked a rivalry that contributed to the creation of the Midwestern States, which later became Bendel State. As a result of his support for Awolowo, Erejuwa II was exiled to Ogbesse, a remote town. Yet, in 1966, following the rise of a military government under General David Ejoor, Erejuwa II was reinstated to the throne. He continued to rule until his passing in 1989.
